A Super Simple 5-Step Guide to Spring Clean Your Hearing Aids

Spring cleaning isn’t just about freshening up your home—we also think it’s the perfect time to clean your hearing aids thoroughly! Proper hearing aid maintenance is crucial if you want to ensure they continue to provide clear, crisp sound all year round.

But of course, there’s a specific way we want you to clean your hearing aids so they don’t get damaged in the process. We’ve compiled five of our favorite cleaning tips (and one important reminder) to help you tackle this task from the comfort of your own home!

Five Simple Steps to Spring Clean Your Hearing Aids

Step 1 – Wipe Down Your Hearing Aids

First things first, gently wipe down your hearing aids with a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid using anything scratchy or rough, and avoid wipes with chemicals or alcohol, as they could damage your hearing aids. This is something that you can do as often as you’d like—you don’t have to wait for spring cleaning season to give your hearing aids a good wipe-down!

Step 2 – Change Your Wax Filter

Your hearing device contains wax filters (or wax traps) designed to prevent ear wax from entering your hearing aid. We recommend that you check this filter once per month to see if it’s time for a replacement. If this is something you haven’t done for a while, don’t feel bad. Just add it to your spring cleaning list, and let us know if you need replacement wax filters!

Step 3 – Brush Your Microphones

When you first received your hearing aids, you should have also received a small brush designed to clean the microphone ports gently. This is pretty easy to do; just hold the hearing aids with the microphones oriented downward while brushing to allow loose particles to fall out. If you don’t have a brush, you can always use a clean, unused, soft-bristled toothbrush!

Step 4 – Care for Your Domes or Earmolds

Domes are the “earbuds” that sit inside the ear canal, and they tend to get pretty dirty. Luckily, cleaning them is simple—just wipe them down with a dry cloth! If you can’t get them clean or they look damaged, it might be time for a replacement. We recommend that domes be replaced every three months or as needed.

Step 5 – Clean Your Hearing Aid Case

In addition to cleaning your hearing aids, you also need to clean the case that you store them in regularly! All you need to do is wipe the case down with an alcohol swab or a paper towel that you’ve sprayed with a cleaning solution. It’s important not to oversaturate the case with cleaning products; just use enough to get it nice and clean. Of course, you’ll want to ensure the case is completely dry before you put your hearing aids back inside.

Important Reminder: Be Cautious When Cleaning Charging Cases!

Some of our patients use charging cases for their hearing aids. These are super convenient, but they also require a little extra care when cleaning them because you don’t want to get the electrical contacts wet. The best way to clean a charging case is to use a small brush or microfiber cloth to wipe down the case gently.

Regularly cleaning your hearing aids and cases not only extends their lifespan but also enhances your listening experience. We hope these simple spring cleaning tips will help you develop a monthly—or maybe even weekly—tune-up routine.
